Project Title

Pilot project on community based disaster preparedness in 10 villages of Madhubani district in Bihar State

Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to promote, strengthen and develop community-based approaches for coping with recurring floods in the targeted blocks of Madhubani district.

The specific objectives are:

  • To build capacities of civil society actors, stakeholders' decision-making groups for sustainable lives and livelihoods with management of floods by the community itself
  • To document in depth study of the present situation, its reasons, effects and the local wisdom of living with floods in different situation in different regions
  • Enable people to organize, aware, plan, prepare and become self-reliant to survive the flood
  • The learning and preparedness of organizations is effectively improved through synergy, networking, and participating of communities to mitigate the natural disaster

  • Awareness and motivation programme
  • Baseline survey and PRA programmes
  • Documentation of traditional way of flood coping mechanism/local wisdom
  • Trainings for community leaders and women
  • Formation and strengthening of community based organisation
  • Capacity building for community leaders
  • TOT for staff within organisation

Expected Outcomes

  • Damages of life and property will be reduced
  • Each projected village will have a capacitated CBO along with trained volunteers for rescue and relief
  • CBOs will have live linkages with different stakeholders
  • Information and resource centre with relevant information and small equipments for mitigation of problems caused by flood
  • Introduction of flood friendly cropping /housing pattern and adoption of flood friendly
  • community technology
  • Strengthen local flood coping mechanism and revival of traditional flood coping mechanism
  • Reduction in water born diseases through primary health care information and practices
